Introduction:

At Kai Coffee, we’re always drawn to coffees that express clarity, structure, and a strong sense of origin. This washed Bourbon from Kayanza, Burundi is a beautiful example of why we continue to return to this region year after year. Bright without being sharp, sweet without being heavy, this coffee offers a refined and balanced cup that feels both vibrant and comforting.

Produced by smallholder farmers delivering cherry to the Dusangirijambo Cooperative, this lot reflects the collective care and precision that defines Burundi’s best coffees. With its layered citrus notes, gentle sweetness, and underlying chocolate depth, it’s a coffee that rewards attention while remaining effortlessly drinkable as a stand-alone single origin.

Dusangirijambo Coop is located in central Burundi and was established in 2013 under COCOCA, a union cooperative of coffee growers in the country. Smallholder farmers in the region deliver ripe cherry to the Bugenyuzi washing station, where careful fermentation and drying practices ensure consistency and quality across the lot. While individual producers may work on very small plots of land, together they contribute to coffees that consistently rank among the most expressive in East Africa.

From The Importer:

This coffee is sourced as a microlot selected from day lots produced at centralized washing stations in Burundi. Due to the extremely small size of individual farms—often less than a quarter of a hectare—microlots here are typically blended from multiple producers rather than traced to a single farm. Selection is based purely on cup quality, allowing the best expressions of the region to shine.

Washed processing in Burundi is meticulous and labor-intensive. Coffee is depulped the same day it is delivered, fermented underwater for 12–24 hours, thoroughly washed, and then dried on raised beds for approximately 20 days, depending on weather conditions. This extended and careful process results in coffees with sparkling acidity, clean structure, and remarkable sweetness.

Cafe Imports has been sourcing coffee from Burundi since 2006 and continues to champion the country as one of Africa’s most exciting specialty origins. Despite logistical challenges and a complex history, the coffees emerging from regions like Kayanza consistently deliver exceptional character, balance, and vibrancy—qualities that make this lot a standout.
