Importer Farm Information:
In 2014, a group of 10 entrepreneurs in Planadas, Tolima, came together to establish the Asociación De Productores De Café Especial La Orquídea (Asoprocafees) with the goal of securing better prices for their coffee. Over time, their membership expanded to include more than 50 producers, all dedicated to improving the quality and sustainability of their coffee to access premium markets.
Planadas, a remote region in Colombia, has faced years of challenges due to intense guerrilla violence. Although peace has been restored, the area still grapples with limited economic opportunities and underdeveloped infrastructure. In this context, La Orquídea has become a vital force for community development, creating jobs and providing opportunities for skill-building.
The cooperative has prioritized producer training and certification, investing in infrastructure to support high-quality coffee production. These efforts include building warehouses, enhancing roads, and educating farmers on best practices for harvesting and processing.
In 2023, Asoprocafees achieved IMPACT verification, demonstrating the power of small producer groups to drive meaningful change through a combination of community-focused initiatives and exceptional coffee production.
IMPACT, Sucafina’s (our importer) responsible sourcing program, supports farmers by providing tools and resources to promote environmental and social sustainability. This includes fostering forest conservation, reducing carbon emissions, encouraging regenerative agriculture, protecting human rights, and ensuring a living income for farmers.
Colombia La Orquídea showcases the unique terroir of Tolima, delivering a cup score of 84-85 with delightful flavor notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, apple, and brown sugar, all complemented by a smooth and viscous body.
Cultivation & Sustainability
Through IMPACT, Asoprocafees enhances soil health with comprehensive testing, promotes forest conservation, reduces carbon emissions, and supports regenerative agriculture. These efforts, combined with investments in roads, milling facilities, and farmer education, empower producers and elevate their coffee's quality and value.
Harvest & Processing
Producers handpick ripe cherries, ferment them on-site, wash them in clean water, and sun-dry the parchment. The cooperative reinvests Fairtrade and Organic premiums into infrastructure improvements, quality labs, and workshops, nurturing both coffee quality and career opportunities in coffee for the next generation.
